I have the honor to submit to you a return of the commissioned Officers who served in the Navy during the late War, including the Officers of the Marines, together with a list of applicants for Offices in the Navy made out by Mr Lear & the documents accompanying the same.1 I have the honor to be with perfect respect Your obedt Servant

1. The enclosures have not been identified. Knox probably prepared these lists in anticipation of the passage of “An Act to provide a Naval Armament,” 27 March 1794 ( . 1:350). For GW’s decision to nominate only the requisite captains at this time, see his letter to the U.S. Senate of 3 June.
