*Dec.1 7. 19. I took the bearing accurately of the range of pavilions, & found it magnetically S. 21. W. the variation of the needle being that day 4.° E. of the true N. or to the right. it [is]2 probable that at the operation of July 18. the merid of W’s Mountn was inadvertently considd as the true [N.]

MS (ViU: TJP); entirely in TJ’s hand; lower corner torn; subjoined to TJ’s Notes on the Siting of Central College, 18 July 1817; filed with TJ’s Specifications for the University of Virginia.

The pavilions here listed as n o ii through IV were later renumbered III, V, and VII, respectively. A necessary is a privy (OED description begins James A. H. Murray, J. A. Simpson, E. S. C. Weiner, and others, eds., The Oxford English Dictionary, 2d ed., 1989, 20 vols. description ends ). hotel b was later renamed Hotel C. w’s mountn: Willis’s Mountain.
