Dear Sir

I received your favor of the 26th. Dec. only two days ago, and tomorrow the bearer Mr. Petit, my overseer, will set out for them. The weather for two days past would not admit of his moving, or they should not have remained an unnecessary hour on your hands, as the trouble of buying them is more than enough on you. You make me happy by the prospect of seeing you here soon. I hope it will be to stay some time. I am Dr. Sir Your affectionate friend & servt

Stuart’s favor of the 26th. Dec., recorded in SJL as received from Staunton on 7 Jan. 1795, has not been found. TJ paid a total of £15.4.2 for 43 sheep acquired in two purchases from Stuart (TJ to Stuart, 2 Dec. 1794, and note; MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 11, 15 Jan. 1795). Hugh Petit served as Monticello overseer from 18 Nov. 1794 to November 1796 (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 18 Nov. 1794, 12 Feb., 8 Aug. 1797; Betts, Farm Book description begins Edwin M.
