To Thomas Jefferson from Mary Jefferson, 16 July 1791

From Mary Jefferson

Monticello, July 16th. 1791

My dear Papa

I have received both your letters, that from Lake George and of June 26th. I am very much obliged to you for them, and think that the bark you wrote on prettier than paper. Mrs. Monroe and Aunt Bolling are here. My aunt would have written to you, but she was unwell. She intends to go to the North Garden. Mr. Monroe is gone to Williamsburg to stay two or three weeks, and has left his lady here. She is a charming woman. My sweet Anne grows prettier every day. I thank you for the pictures and nankeen that you sent me, which I think very pretty. Adieu, dear papa. I am your affectionate daughter,

Maria Jefferson

MS not found; text taken from Randolph, Domestic Life description begins Sarah N. Randolph, The Domestic Life of Thomas Jefferson, Compiled from Family Letters and Reminiscences by His Great-Granddaughter, Cambridge, Mass., 1939 description ends , p. 170, where the date is given as 10 July 1791. Recorded in SJL as written 16 July and as received 9 Aug. 1791. The date was evidently blurred or unclear, for in his letter to Martha of 14 Aug. 1791 TJ referred to “Maria’s … of July 16.” and a week later in his response to Mary he referred to it as “Your letter of July 10.” The Editors have accepted the date given above as the more probable one since it gained TJ’s approval two out of three times.
