Thomas Jefferson’s Promissory Note to Thomas Jefferson Randolph, 21 August 1818

Promissory Note to Thomas Jefferson Randolph

Monticello 21st August 1818.

$3000.

Sixty five days after date I promise to pay to Thomas J. Randolph or order, negotiable and payable at the Office of discount and deposit of the United States bank in Richmond without offset Three thousand dollars for value received

Th: Jefferson

MS (MHi); written on a half sheet in Patrick Gibson’s hand, signed by TJ.

At the date of this document, TJ was still at Warm Springs, not monticello. His financial records indicate that a note in this amount to his grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph was renewed on this date (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1350). The presence of the extant text in TJ’s papers may suggest that it is a previously signed and dated but unused duplicate.
