From Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, 26 August 1791

To James Madison

Friday Aug. 26.

Th:J. To J.M.

Will you come and sit an hour before dinner to-day? Also take soup with me tomorrow?

Since writing the above the President has been here, and left L’Enfant’s plan, with a wish that you and I would examine it together immediately, as to certain matters, and let him know the result. As the plan is very large, will you walk up and examine it here?

RC (DLC); addressed: “Mr. Madison.” Not recorded in SJL.

L’enfant’s plan: the map that L’Enfant later took back to the federal district and refused to make available for engraving (see Editorial Note on fixing the seat of government, Vol. 20: 33–41; and TJ to Commissioners, 28 Aug. 1791).
