96.  Ellen W. Randolph, who was in Washington, evidently paid for plaster busts of James Madison and James Monroe which TJ had asked Daniel Brent to procure for him. They were made by the Italian sculptor Peter Cardelli, who had taken TJ’s portrait bust at Monticello in 1819, and are now unlocated (TJ to Brent, 11 Sep. 1821; TJ to John Barnes, 7 Apr. 1822; Bush, Life Portraits, p. 88-91 description begins Alfred L. Bush, “The Life Portraits of Thomas Jefferson,” Jefferson and the Arts: An Extended View, ed. William Howard Adams, Washington, D.C., 1976 description ends ).

97. On hearing that Bernard Peyton was unable to discount the note, TJ drew a line through the entry and wrote “It was not discounted.” When the note was eventually discounted, but not used for the purposes described here, TJ deleted the word “not” (Peyton to TJ, 21 and 25 Mch. 1822; TJ to Peyton, 10 May 1822).

98.  William Coffee had offered to come to Monticello to clean and revarnish TJ’s collection of paintings in return for the payment of his travel expenses from New York. He had arrived 31 Dec. 1821 (Coffee to TJ, 16 Mch. 1820, 1 Nov. 1821; TJ to Coffee, 22 Nov. 1821). At least one family member thought that Coffee’s conservation efforts, which included some repainting, detracted from rather than enhanced the value of the collection (Ellen W. Coolidge to Virginia J. Trist, 13 May 1828, ViU).

99. TJ wrote “This shd. be G.W.N.?” (George W. Nicholas) in TJ Index, 1821-1825 description begins Thomas Jefferson manuscript indexes for the Memorandum Books, 1767-1826, bound with them, except for 1773 (unlocated), 1776-1778 and 1779-1782 (ViU) description ends .

1. This waterproof cement from Richard Randolph, owner of the Kaolin pottery near Richmond, was intended but not used for lining the Monticello cisterns (TJ to Randolph, 13 May 1822; Randolph to TJ, 30 May 1822).

2. Here TJ was “taken in, and . . . not for the first time,” by an imposter, who later thought better of his caper and returned the draft unused (TJ to Thomas Leiper, 27 Apr. 1822; MB 19 Apr. 1822).

3. TJ employed Peter B. Read to rebuild his sawmill and to reconstruct the bolting gear of the Shadwell manufacturing mill (TJ to Thomas E. Randolph, 10 Sep. 1822; Randolph to TJ, 18 Sep. 1822).

4.  Gough and a certain Bagby had been the new overseers at Poplar Forest since the beginning of 1822, replacing Joel Yancey and the two overseers under him. TJR had been managing the Bedford County property for TJ since early 1821 (TJ to Yancey, 4 Jan. 1821; Yancey to TJ, 22 Dec. 1821).

5. This machine for raising objects of great weight consisted of a geared axle and iron spur wheel in a wooden frame and was similar to those brought from Philadelphia to Washington by Benjamin H. Latrobe for use in the construction of the Capitol. TJ had purchased one while president for his building works at Monticello (TJ to Benjamin King, 12 Dec. 1822; King to TJ, 3 Jan. 1823; Darwin H. Stapleton, ed., The Engineering Drawings of Benjamin Henry Latrobe [New Haven, 1980], p. 240-1).
