Joseph Carrington Cabell, who was at this time twenty-one years old, was an alumnus of William and Mary. Cabell was a legislator, visitor, and rector who labored for more than three decades on behalf of the University of Virginia (John Hammond Moore, Albemarle: Jefferson’s County, 1727–1976 [Charlottesville, 1976], 129).
