Richmond July 23d: 1798.

Dear Sir,

At the request of Mr. Darmsdatt I send you the enclosed account.

I this morning forwarded your nail-rod (3 Ton) and a Tea-chest—having informed the boatmen that I would not engage to give them 3/. ⅌ hundred as I had done in several instances, because you generally had it carried up for less—and that they must therefore settle it with you.

I advanced one of them (P. Gibson, alias Mingo Jackson) four dollars. I am mt. sincerely Dear Sir Your Very Obt. servt.

On 12 Dec. TJ had Thomas Mann Randolph pay Joseph Darmsdatt, the merchant in Richmond who supplied Monticello with salt fish, £41, probably in payment of the enclosed account (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:916, 994; TJ to Darmsdatt, 27 May 1810). Letters from TJ to Darmsdatt (Darmstadt) of 17 July 1796, 3 May, 18 July, and 25 Aug. 1797, recorded in SJL, have not been found. Letters from Darmsdatt to TJ of 20 July 1796 and 26 July 1797, recorded in SJL as received 22 and 28 July respectively, are also missing. On 28 Aug. TJ gave Thomas Gibson, alias Moses Jackson, an order on Fleming & McClenahan for £4–7 for storing and transporting nailrod to Monticello (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C.
