I have been favd. with yours of the 11th. Instant,1 in which you mention having recd. from your Brother for me a Portrait of the late President, engraved from a painting of Stewart;2 and that You had sent it to the Care of Mr. Constable—3
I have since recd. it and am much obliged by this mark of your Brothers attention, as well as by your Care respecting it. When next you write to your Brother be pleased to present to him my Thanks— I am impatient to hear of Benjn., and the more ^so^ as we had Reason to expect he would before This Time have arrived in America—4 I am Dr Sir, Your most obt. 2. Engraving not found. The engraving was probably based on either Stuart’s 1796 life-size portrait of GW held by the Marquis of Lansdowne or his earlier portrait of 1795.
3. Probably Dublin-born William Constable, a wealthy merchant and land speculator of New York. Constable travelled to Europe for the purpose of selling land that he had acquired in northern New York.
