From John Jay to Sarah Louisa Jay, 4 May 1813

To Sarah Louisa Jay

Bedford 4 May 1813

My dear Sally

The last mail brought no Letters for either of us from You or your Sister. Nancy returned Yesterday from Rye, where she found and ^left^ our Friends as well as they usually are. Effy was from home, on a visit to her Family in Jersey. Nancy took Clarinda with her, to see her Sister Mary, who had passed the winter there— They had not seen each other for a great many Years.

Augusta writes to William, that her Sister has a Son— and a Letter from Peter to me,1 informs us that he and his Family were well. We have had some Sickness here— Roe was ill for ten Days with a Fever; but is now at work— and for nearly a week past, Elisa has been much indisposed,— by what the Doctr. thinks hysteric affections— The Rest of us are as well as at the Date of my last— I have not heard of any new Cases of the Fever lately; but the measles prevail among our neighbours.

The Result of the Election excites much Interest, and the many Reports and Calculations respecting it which are current, are very contradictory.

The whole number given, in this Town; of votes for Governor, are 235— of these Mr. VRenselaer had 180, and Mr. Tompkins 55— The majority for the Assembly Ticket was 155— So that the People of this Town support their Reputation.2

Caty is still with us— she is not quite well— her Health is delicate— perhaps the approaching fine Season may improve it—

Our Love to Maria I am my Dear Sally your very affte. Father

John Jay
