From John Jay to Peter Augustus Jay, 17 May 1801
To Peter Augustus Jay
Bedford 17 May 1801—Sunday—
Dear Peter
We left Albany last Wednesday near night— The next Day we Stopped for an hour at Oak Hill—1 You[r] Mama was not worse, but still very feeble. We arrived at Sinsing on Friday Morning, and last Evening came here, where we found every thing that we could expect had been done to accommodate us—2 Saml. will take this Letter in the morning to Sinsing to put in the post office there.
Inform your uncle of our arrival, and also your Cousin Munro—Opportunities of sending Letters from here to the former I believe are not frequent— Engaged as I am in getting our Effects from Sinsing, it will not be in my power to visit Rye for some time yet. We shall have a spare bed ready on Tuesday— Nancy is well and desires to be remembered to you, and your Uncle & Aunt, and to your Aunt Munro & Cousins— I am Dear Peter your affectionate Father
John Jay
P.S. Send my Tool Chest, (and Grinding Stone) and the Box with English Locks, to Rye— I wish there might be an opportunity of Sending ^them^ by Mr Deals boat and under his Care— I am anxious that they may not meet with disagreable Accidents— I will after knowing they are at Rye, send a waggon for them
