From John Jay to Maria Jay Banyer, 13 May 1823

To Maria Jay Banyer

Bedford—13 May 1823.—

My dear Maria—

I have recieved your two Letters of the 9th. Inst—and one from Peter of the same date.1 Such was the weather on the Day you left us, that we feared your Ride would be very uncomfortable—and are glad to find that you did not suffer from it. It was kind in aunt2 to send you and your Brother to New York in her Carriage— I hope the ensuing Season will prove beneficial to her Health, and that she will again be able to walk alone—

Your Remarks respecting the late Meeting of the Bible Society are interesting. The Conduct of Mr Clinton as to my Address was liberal & friendly— It is said that the next mail will bring Papers in which the Speeches you mention will be published—3 they will afford us Subjects for Conversation when we meet— Let the Time of your Return depend on Circumstances— for if your Health should derive Benefit from change of Air & Situation, it would be adviseable to prolong you stay on that Account; and also to repeat such Excursions frequently—

I am glad Mr. Isaacs4 dines with you— Marks of Attention are due to him from our Family. His Account of Col. Holly5 is more favorable than was expected here— We had heard that his Case was supposed to be desperate, and that his Recovery was not probable. I hope his Convalescence will continue and be perfected— Nancy will write to you— My Love to Peter, Mary & the children, and to Aunt Symmes6 who I suppose is still with you— I am my Dear Daughter Your very affte. Father
