To William Miller

NYork 5 Ap[ril] 1792

Dr Sr

I have recd. your Letter of the 2d. Ap.1 and it would give me Pleasure to answer the Questions stated ^in it,^ if my being a Judge did not restrain me from giving Opinions on Law Questions prevents except judicially— Altho the Case you State may not come before the fœderal Court, similar ones may— Besides it has appeared to me adviseable to give no Opinions of that Sort, ^make no observe this Rule cautiously and attentively lest^ the Report ^act^ of my having given them in some Cases that ^such opinions (even in Cases not within the Jurisdiction of the fæderal Court)^ might be so misrepresented or misunderstood as to subject me to improper suspicions or Imputations— If you shd. see Mr Munro, put the Case to him— On his return I will communicate your Letter to him, and request him to write to you, unless he shd. before that Time have given you ^his^ opinion— With the best wishes & with real Esteem I am Dr Sr your m Friend & very obedient hble Servt.
