From John Jay to William Carmichael, 14 August 1783

To William Carmichael

Passy 14 Augt. 1783

Sir

I have this moment recd. a Letter from His Exy. the Count de Montmorin,1 in wh. he mentions your having communicated to him my Letter to you of the  2 Ult., and also favors me with his Sentiments on the Subject of it. As that Letter was written by me in a public Capacity, to you in a public Capacity, and on public Business, I endulged the Expectation of recg an Answer to it from You.

When public Servants are officially called upon to settle their accounts, I think the ordinary current Business of their appointmts. must so far give way to that Object, as may be necessary to the occasion attainmt accomplishmt of it. As ^all^ the accounts in Question have been kept by you—as they have been increased since my absence, & as they should be brought here together with the original Vouchers & Documents in the safest Manner, I am still of Opinion that you shd. bring them here without Delay, and join with me in attending their Settlement.

Whatever may be your Determination, permit me to desire you to inform me of it explicitly by the Return of the Post I am Sir Your most obt. & hble Servt.

The Honble Wm. Carmichael Esqr
