Dear Sir

Since I came to Town on Thursday last and had the honor to call on you, I have been laid up with a violent and new attack of Gout; which has denied me the pleasure of repeating my visit.

I am endeavoring to make arrangements to go to Europe in the Spring to dispose of my Jamaica property. Should you have any commands I will be happy to take charge of them.

My second son, John, has for a long time past, desired to get into the American Army, and has got some friends to make application for an appointment. his Talents and choise are directed to the artillery.

If Sir there be no impropriety in the request; and you can without difficulty, do me the singular favor to further his views you will greatly oblige Dear Sir

John Adams nominated John Hylton of Maryland to be a second lieutenant in the third regiment of infantry on 4 Feb. 1801 and the Senate confirmed him on 16 Feb. 1801 (JEP description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States … to the Termination of the Nineteenth Congress, Washington, D.C., 1828, 3 vols. description ends , 1:379, 380; Heitman, Dictionary, description begins Francis B. Heitman, comp., Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army …, Washington, D.C., 1903, 2 vols. description ends 1:561; William Hylton, Sr. to TJ, 27 Mch. 1801). William Hylton, Sr., stopped at Monticello in the summer of 1796 on his way to the springs and gave TJ a report on the use of the threshing machine (Vol. 29:170).
