Philadelphia Octor 14th 1779


I am honoured with your Excellency’s favours of the 7th & 9th Instant with their Several enclosures.1

By the Act of Congress of this day herewith enclosd you will receive their Thanks for directing the important Expedition which hath been so Effectually executed by Genl Sullivan & the Brave Officers & Soldiers under his Command.2

Be assured Sir it is with pleasure I have the honour of Communicating to your Excellency the Continued approbation & Thanks of Congress on account of your eminent & unremitting Services in the Cause of your Country, And that I am with the highest Sentiments of Esteem and regard your humble Servt

2The enclosed extract from the journals of Congress of 14 Oct., signed by Charles Thomson, secretary of Congress, reads: “Resolved—That the thanks of Congress be given to his Excellency General Washington for directing, and to Major General Sullivan and the brave Officers and Soldiers under his command, for effectually executing an important expedition against such of the Indian Nations, as, encouraged by the Councils, and Conducted by the Officers of his Britannic Majesty, had perfidiously waged an unprovoked & cruel war against these United States, laid waste many of their defenceless towns and with savage barbarity slaughtered the Inhabitants thereof” (DLC:GW; see also JCC, description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends 15: 1169–70). The resolution, with the exception of the phrase concerning GW, was published in the general orders for 21 October.
