ALS: American Philosophical Society

[c. July 11, 1784]6

Monsieur

Notation: Hilliard D’auberteuil

6The day Hilliard’s Mis Mac Rea, roman historique (Philadelphia [i.e., Brussels?], 1784) was reviewed in the Jour. de Paris. Two years earlier, Hilliard had written an account of Jane McCrea’s brutal murder for his Essais historiques et politiques; he had now turned it into a novella: XXXVII, 420n.

7Two clues in this undated letter point to the work being Mis Mac Rea: Hilliard’s allusion to an American subject and the numerous typographical errors. On account of the misprints, Mis Mac Rea was reissued in a second edition; see Lewis Leary’s introduction, pp. 5–6, in Michel-René Hilliard d’Auberteuil, Miss McCrea (1784): a Novel of the American Revolution, trans. Eric LaGuardia (Gainesville, Fla., 1958). The enclosed work was indeed a “petit ouvrage,” printed in 18°.
