Sir.

Upon receiving this letter you are immediately to repair to camp to the exercise of the duties of your office1—There is no useful purpose answered that I know of by your absence, while the advantages of the institution are in a great measure lost to the army.

If you have procured cloathing for your corps, it may be directed to be sent on after you. I am Sir your obt hble servt.

1. Heer had been appointed in June 1778 to command the new Maréchaussée Corps. He was apparently at Philadelphia making a representation to the Board of War about difficulties in recruiting for the corps (see JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 11:729). A copy of the resolution passed in response on 29 July is in DLC:GW.
