From George Washington to Captain Bartholomew von Heer, 27 July 1778

To Captain Bartholomew von Heer

Head Quarters White plains 27 July 1778

Sir.

Upon receiving this letter you are immediately to repair to camp to the exercise of the duties of your office1—There is no useful purpose answered that I know of by your absence, while the advantages of the institution are in a great measure lost to the army.

If you have procured cloathing for your corps, it may be directed to be sent on after you. I am Sir your obt hble servt.

Df, in James McHenry’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW.

1Heer had been appointed in June 1778 to command the new Maréchaussée Corps. He was apparently at Philadelphia making a representation to the Board of War about difficulties in recruiting for the corps (see JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 11:729). A copy of the resolution passed in response on 29 July is in DLC:GW.
