Philadelphia June 28. 1802.

Sir,

Some Years ago Edmund Randolph Esqr. lent me some volumes of public Records, with which I understood your Excellency had some Connection. I afterwards returned them; & as I thought, the whole of them; but, upon removing my Books into another Apartment lately, I have been surprized by finding myself still in possession of a volume of Records of Escheats. Major Rodgers has been so obliging as to undertake the Charge of delivering it safely, and I am happy in so good an Opportunity of Conveyance;—by him I send it, with many Thanks, & Assurances of the Consideration with which I remain

Former postmaster general of the United States Ebenezer Hazard had collected PUBLIC RECORDS for his compilation, Historical Collections: Consisting of State Papers ... Intended as Materials for an History of the United States, published in two volumes from 1792 to 1794 in Philadelphia (DAB description begins Allen Johnson and Dumas Malone, eds., Dictionary of American Biography, New York, 1928–36, 20 vols. description ends ; Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, Washington, D.C., 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends No. 3044; see also Vol. 1:144–9, Vol. 19:287–9).
