Vincennes 26th. Novr. 1803.

The Governor of the Indiana Territory presents his respectful Compliments to the President of the United States and requests his acceptance of the enclosed map which is a Copy of the manuscript map of Mr. Evans who ascended the Missouri River by order of the Spanish Government much further than any other person—

RC (DLC); in Harrison’s hand; endorsed by TJ as received 20 Dec. and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure not found, but see below.

TJ forwarded the map to Meriwether Lewis on 13 Jan. 1804. By that time Lewis and William Clark obtained from other sources, including directly from Harrison to Clark, copies of maps based on information collected by John Thomas evans on a trip up the Missouri River beginning in 1796 on instructions from James Mackay, a trader affiliated with the Missouri Company (Moulton, Journals of the Lewis & Clark Expedition description begins Gary E.
