On the 12th of March last I had the honor of addressing a letter to you on the subject of Mr. Pagan. As you have never acknowledged the receipt of that letter, I am apprehensive it may not have reached you: if that shall have been the case, I will transmit you a copy of it, and am with due respect, Sir, Your very humble servant,

Concerning Hammond’s 12 Mch. 1793 letter, see TJ to Edmund Randolph, 13 Mch. 1793. The present letter from Hammond, and TJ’s reply printed below, may have been included in the correspondence with the British minister on the Pagan case that TJ submitted to the President on 18 Apr. 1793 and that was returned to him the next day (, 110, 114).
