I have just received a letter from the Secretary of war1 in which he informs me that the resignation of Lieutenant Samuel W. Church2 of your regiment is accepted. You will please to signify the same to Lieutenant Church, and inform me when he actually receives the notice.

Church was appointed an ensign in the Fourteenth Regiment of Infantry on March 3, 1799 ( , 323), and on the same day, in accordance with Section 2 of “An Act for the better organizing of the Troops of the United States; and for other purposes” ( 749–55 [March 3, 1799]), he became a second lieutenant ( , I, 301).
