1Tallmadge, a merchant in Litchfield, Connecticut, was treasurer of the Ohio Company. During the American Revolution, Tallmadge served as a lieutenant in the Continental line and was promoted successively to captain, major, and colonel of dragoons. From 1778 to 1783 he was engaged in secret service and carried on a confidential correspondence with George Washington. In 1792 he was appointed postmaster at Litchfield and subsequently was president of the Society of the Cincinnati.
