Receipt to Benjamin Tallmadge1

[New York, May 6, 1803]

I Alexander Hamilton of New York acknowledge to have received of Benjamin Tallmadge, Treasurer of the OHIO COMPANY, ninety seven Dollars five cents being the third dividend payable on five Shares in said Company,2 in the agency of Winthrop Sargent.3 Dated at New York this sixth Day of May 1803.

1Tallmadge, who was brevetted a lieutenant colonel at the close of the American Revolution, was a merchant and deputy postmaster in Litchfield, Connecticut, and treasurer of the Ohio Company. In 1800 Tallmadge was elected to the House of Representatives as a Federalist and served in Congress until 1817.

3Sargent, a veteran of the American Revolution, a native of Massachusetts, and a Federalist, was the surveyor of the Seven Ranges in Ohio in 1786 and in the same year helped to found the Ohio Company. In 1787 he became secretary of the Ohio Company and secretary of the Territory Northwest of the River Ohio. In 1798 he was appointed governor of the Mississippi Territory, a post which he held until 1801.
