From Alexander Hamilton to Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, 23 May 1800

To Charles Cotesworth Pinckney

Head Quarters
Plainfield N. Jersey
May 23rd. 1800

Sir

I have directed the Pay Master General1 to send to his Deputy in your district2 bounty money subject to your order for four complete companies of Infantry.3 You will be pleased, if there are any officers of the four old regiments within your reach, to send for them that they may be employed in recruiting the men. If none such are near you, you will imploy the officers of the new regiments for the purpose.

I have just received your letter of the 13th and am glad to find that the information of the S of War was incorrect.

G. Pinckney

Df, in the handwriting of Thomas Y. How, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress.

3These were the four “old” regiments of Infantry, which were part of the Regular Army. See H to Pinckney, Nathan Rice, and William S. Smith, May 17, 1800. See also the to H to James Gunn, December 22, 1798.
