From Alexander Hamilton to Tobias Lear, [15 December 1792]

To Tobias Lear

[Philadelphia, December 15, 1792]

Dr. Sir,

The Supervisor of Massachusetts1 is desirous of permission to come to Philadelphia on urgent private business. I believe the permission may be given him without injury to the service. Will you mention the matter to the President and inform me by a line whether permission may be notified to him or not.

Yours &c.

A: Hamilton

1Nathaniel Gorham. See Tench Coxe to H, December 12, 1792.

On December 18, 1792, Coxe wrote to Gorham stating that the President had approved “your absence from the District for the purpose mentioned in your last letter, provided no injury is likely to arise to the public service” (LC, RG 58, Letters of Commissioner of Revenue, 1792–1793, National Archives).
