To Thomas Jefferson from Alexander Hamilton, 28 August 1790

From Alexander Hamilton

New York, 28 Aug. 1790. Requests two copies of “An Act making provision for the debt of the United States” and of “An Act making provision for the reduction of the public debt,” together with two copies of his commission as secretary of the treasury, all “certified and exemplified under the Great Seal.” A vessel is expected to sail for Amsterdam in the evening by which he wishes to send some of the copies and so he will “be obliged by their being ready as soon as possible.”

RC (DNA: RG 59, MLR); in Hamilton’s hand, signature missing. Not recorded in SJL.

Tench Coxe had written TJ on 24 Aug. 1790 requesting two copies each of these same two acts “for transmission to Europe”; Hamilton’s request was evidently a repetition caused by the need for haste (RC in DNA: RG 59, MLR; not recorded in SJL). On 30 Aug. 1790 Hamilton requested “two more authenticated copies of his Commission as Secretary of the Treasury … and three Copies of his Commission or power for making the Loan,” adding: “Mr. Hamilton will probably stand in need of those instruments before he will have an opportunity of seeing Mr. Jefferson (RC in same; endorsed by Remsen as received same day; not recorded in SJL). One of the attested copies of the act for the reduction of the public debt was sent to William Short (DLC: Short Papers; the attestation is in Remsen’s hand, signed by TJ with seal of office attached, is dated 28 Aug. 1790, and has a printed text of the act annexed).
