From Alexander Hamilton to Tench Coxe, 8 November 1794

To Tench Coxe

Rostrave1 Camp [Pennsylvania] Novr. 8. 1794

Sir

As the Army will shortly be on the return from this Country, it is necessary to make an arrangement for the Supply. Mr Eli Williams2 will provide for the Virginia troops to Winchester, The Maryland troops to Williampsort, The Pensylvania Troops to Lancaster, The New Jersey troops to Trenton. The Quartermaster General3 will do the Same in his department. A provision remains to be made to furnish & Convey the troops from those points to their respective homes.

You will engage Carrington4 to take the Virginia troops at Winchester, Gale5 to take up those of Maryland at Williamsport Hunt6 of Trenton to take up those of New Jersey at that place & whomsoever you please to take up those of Pensylvania at Lancaster.7

You will confer with the secretary of War & take in Concert the needful Steps. Mr. Woolcott8 will furnish the Money. No time is to be lost.

7On November 24, 1794, Coxe wrote to Jacob Bower of Reading: “… I have recd. from the Secy of the Treasy. a letter of the 8 inst. relative to the return of the Pnnsylva. Division of the Militia Army. That Division will be returned from the westward to Lancaster under the care of Elie Williams & Henry Miller Esqrs in regard to Rations, forage, transportation and all other Articles of commissary & Quarter master’s supplies & aids. At that place (Lancasr.) Mr [Matthias] Slough will take them & provide for them, till they shall reach the place where you provided for them going up; there, you will be pleased to take them under your charge for all the objects of Supply, transportation, & aid in the line of those Officers, and you will procure them to be fully & regularly supplied and accommodated therewith ’till their departure from Reading, & to their next station of supply, in their way to their homes …” (LC, RG 75, Letters of Tench Coxe, Commissioner of the Revenue, Relating to the Procurement of Military, Naval, and Indian Supplies, National Archives).
