From Alexander Hamilton to Tench Coxe, 31 January 1795

To Tench Coxe

[Philadelphia, January 31, 1795. On February 9, 1795, Coxe wrote to Oliver Wolcott, Jr.: “A letter of the 31st. Ultimo from the late Secretary of the Treasury1 having confirmed the opinion that there does not exist authority to defray the expence of gauging wines by the Collectors of the Customs on Importation, if they are liable to duty ad valorem.”2 Letter not found.]
