From Alexander Hamilton to Tench Coxe, 8 January 1795

The Secretary of the Treasury requests the Commissioner of the Revenue to take measures with District Attorney for arresting proceedings against the stills which have been seized in the fourth survey of the District of Pensylvania till some definitive plans shall have been adopted.1

1. Survey No. 4 consisted of the counties of western Pennsylvania in which the Whiskey Insurrection of 1794 had occurred. On January 10, 1795, Coxe wrote to Henry Miller, supervisor of the revenue for the District of Pennsylvania: “You will be so good as to take measures with the Attorney of the United States for the District of Pennsylvania [William Rawle] for the suspension of the proceedings in regard to the stills which have been seized in the fourth survey.
