[New York, August 17, 1797]
My Dr Sir
Inclosed are some papers,1 which were sent me shortly after my return to this City from Philadelphia2 but which from Mrs. Hamilton’s situation3 hurry of business &c have been forgotten. If there is any thing to be said to my correspondent you will enable me as speedily as possible to say it. I send you the 100 Dollars you sent me and a further sum to reimburse some money paid for me by Lewis.4

1. The enclosed papers, sent to H by James Tillary, a New York City physician and politician, concerned the trading house of William Panton, Robert Leslie, and Company. The enclosures have not been found. For Panton’s earlier correspondence with Tillary, see Panton to Tillary, May 5, 1794 (ALS, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress).
2. H had been in Philadelphia collecting documents for the appendix to the “Reynolds Pamphlet,” August 25, 1797.
3. William Stephen Hamilton was born on August 4, 1797.
4. Samuel Lewis was a clerk in the War Department.
