1. John Lawrence Mosheim, An Ecclesiastical History, Ancient and Modern, from the Birth of Christ, to the Beginning of the Present Century: In Which the Rise, Progress, and Variations of Church Power Are Considered in Their Connexion with the State of Learning and Philosophy, and the Political History of Europe during That Period (6 vols.; Philadelphia, 1797–98; Evans 32513, 34154). This is the first American edition.
2. Sir Walter Scott, The Abbot; Being the Sequel of The Monastery … (2 vols.; New York, 1820; Shoemaker 3132).
3. This was one of the many editions of the works of Horace, originally edited and expurgated for the use of the French dauphin, son of Louis XIV (John Devoe Belton, comp., A Literary Manual of Foreign Quotations; Ancient and Modern, With Illustrations from American and English Authors and Explanatory Notes [New York, 1891], 5).
