To James Madison from John Graham, 6 August 1816

From John Graham

Dept. of State. 6th Augt. 1816.

Dear Sir

I send you a Letter from Mr Adams of old date which was received yesterday.1 Those which it covers are of some interest and I believe you have not seen them before. I have also the pleasure to send a Letter from Mr. Russell,2 and a Memorial from certain Merchants in Phia relative to thier claims on Denmark.3

Mr Forrest has returned from Baltimore and tells me that we may expect the translation of the Deys Letter today or tomorrow. I had wished him to wait for it, but as he left Mrs Forrest very unwell, he was anxious to return immediately and did so. Most Respectfully I am Dear Sir your Obt Hble Sert.

J Graham

RC (DLC). Docketed by JM. For enclosures, see nn.

1Graham could have been referring either to John Quincy Adams’s dispatch of 18 May 1816 or that of 30 May 1816, both of which covered correspondence dealing with British policy in the Mediterranean, relating particularly to Algiers (DNA: RG 59, DD, Great Britain).

2Jonathan Russell sent James Monroe two letters, one on 31 May and the other on 10 June 1816. The first provided the details of Sweden’s accession to the terms of the Holy Alliance in September 1815; the second announced that Russell had informed the Swedish court about the details of the disputes between Spain and the United States (DNA: RG 59, DD, Sweden and Norway; 1 p. each).

3The enclosure was a memorial, dated 15 July 1816, from the merchants of Philadelphia describing the seizure of three American vessels that had sailed in 1810 and the condemnation of their cargoes in Denmark, signed by Archibald McCall and twenty-six others. The petitioners requested the president to make representations to the court of Denmark for compensation for the cargoes seized (DNA: RG 59, ML; 3 pp.).
