To Benjamin Franklin from Joseph Galloway, 21 October 1773

From Joseph Galloway1

ALS: American Philosophical Society

Trevose, Bucks, Octr. 21st. 1773

Dear Sir

Mr. John Coxe, the Son of Mr. William Coxe my Friend and Neighbour, comes to England with Intent to finish his Study of the Law at one of the Temples.2 His good Character and close Application to the Business of his intended Profession, added to an Opinion I have entertained of his Abilities, induces me to recommend him to your Notice and Advice. Any Favors you shall be so kind as to confer on him will be adding to the Number of those already done to Dear Sir, your faithful humble Servant

Jos. Galloway

Addressed: To / Benjamin Franklin Esqr / in / Craven Street / London

1BF was writing frequently to Galloway; but the Speaker, unless many of his letters have disappeared, did not reciprocate. On April 6 BF had mentioned having had no word from him. As far as we know he had thereafter only this brief note and two letters, now missing, which he acknowledged below on Nov. 3, 1773, and Feb. 18, 1774. The old friendship may have survived after the political alliance evaporated, as argued by Benjamin Newcomb in Franklin and Galloway: a Political Partnership (New Haven and London, 1972), pp. 234–6. But friendship, to judge by the evidence that remains, did not show itself in a two-way correspondence.

2Galloway’s neighbor, William D. Coxe, was a Philadelphia merchant and a large landholder in New Jersey; he had resigned as a stamp distributor in 1765: above, X, 213 n; XII, 256 n. His son John (1752–1824) had graduated in 1769 from the College of Pennsylvania; in his later years he was a state and federal judge.
