I have the honour to enclose a copy of a Letter from the Collector of Bristol Rhode Island, and

RC (DLC); in a clerk’s hand, signed by Gallatin; at foot of text: “The President of the United States”; endorsed by TJ as received from the Treasury Department on 6 Jan. and “Jonathan Russell’s case” and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure not found.

The enclosed letter from Rhode Island Republican Jonathan Russell, of Providence, probably pertained to his resignation as collector at Bristol. On 24 Feb., TJ nominated Charles Collins, Jr., as his successor. The next month, TJ nominated Russell as U.S. consul at Tunis, but he declined the appointment (Vol. 34:145, 146-7n, 266, 341; Vol. 36:321, 332; TJ to the Senate, 24 Feb., 22 Mch. 1804; Levi Lincoln to TJ, 17 Apr. 1804).
