7 January 1813. “I enclose the usual account of the contingent expences of Govt.—which is sent by yourself to each house of Congress. The triplicate remains with you.”1

1. According to the enclosed one-page account, prepared by Joseph Nourse and dated 6 Jan. 1813, the contingent expenses of government from 1 Jan. to 31 Dec. 1812 were $16,844.72. The account included $120 in favor of Gideon Granger for the “expenses of taking possession of a part of West Florida under the Presidents Proclamation of October 1810; and for which … Claiborne is charged.”
