The Secretary of War has the honor to solicit permission from the President of the United States to appoint Joseph Gilbert Totton, a Cadet in the Corps of Engineers.

A nephew and ward of Jared Mansfield, Joseph Gilbert Totten (TOTTON) enjoyed a distinguished career as a military engineer following his graduation from West Point in 1805. In 1838, he was appointed head of the Corps of Engineers and retained the post until his death in 1864 (ANB description begins John A. Garraty and Mark C.
