City of Washington Decemr 18th 1794.
Sir,
Your favor of the 24th Ulto with the inclosure came to hand1—We take the liberty of enclosing our letters to Mr Trumbull and his Brother for your perusal.2
We embrace this occasion to say that it is our intention to send for your information a statement of the business of the City as far as may be in our power, and Materials for that purpose can be collected together. We are &c.

1. The commissioners were referring to GW’s letter to them of 27 November. The incorrect number was most likely an error by the copyist.
2. The commissioners’ letter to John Trumbull of this date stated that “We do not at present see an opening sufficient to encourage Mr. Hatfield to come to the City under a prospect of being employed in the public Service,” although they promised to keep him in mind for possible future employment (DNA: RG 42, Records of the Commissioners for the District of Columbia, Letters Sent, 1791–1802). Their letter of this date to Jonathan Trumbull sent the former letter open for his perusal and asked him to forward it. They expressed regret about “the necessity of declining to hold out a prospect of success to Mr Hatfield” (DNA: RG 42, Records of the Commissioners for the District of Columbia, Letters Sent, 1791–1802).
