9Kemp, of Maryland, and Tindall (Tindill, Tindale) had each made previous escape attempts from Mill Prison that landed them in the black hole. In one of his more dramatic attempts, Tindall took the place of a corpse leaving the prison in a coffin. The two men finally escaped together on April 2: Claghorn, Naval Officers, p. 173; Kaminkow, Mariners, p. 104; Sheldon S. Cohen, Yankee Sailors in British Gaols: Prisoners of War at Forton and Mill, 1777–1783 (Newark, Del., and London, 1995), pp. 183, 186, 221; Charles Francis Jenkins, “John Claypoole’s Memorandum-Book,” PMHB, XVI (1892), 179, 189.

1On April 29, Kemp presented BF with an order for 550 l.t. drawn on Jonathan Nesbitt & Co. of Lorient. BF sent this to Grand, who remitted the sum to Kemp. Grand then drew on the account of JW, who drew on Williams, Moore & Co. When that firm presented the bill to Nesbitt & Co. on May 23, it was protested. On July 17, BF paid the protest fee of 3 l.t. 15 s.: Memorandum of ——— Ollivier and Th. Le Guéval, May 24, 1782 (APS); Account XVII (XXVI, 3); Account XXVII (XXXII, 4).
