From Lieutenant Colonel James Chambers

[New] Utrecht [N.Y.] 5 May 1776. Sends “⟨one⟩ petter pillyous⟨e, who was taken yesterday coming⟩ from the Asia man of w⟨ar; he was taken by Mr.⟩ Docherty who Commanded ⟨the picket-guard at⟩ that time and will Let y⟨ou know the particulars⟩.”1

AL[S], N: New York Provincial Congress, Revolutionary Papers. The ALS was nearly destroyed in the New York State Library fire of 1911 leaving only a small fragment of the original manuscript. Most of the text is taken from Force, American Archives description begins Peter Force, ed. American Archives. 9 vols. Washington, D.C., 1837–53. description ends , 4th ser., 5:1204.

1John Doughterty enlisted in Capt. John Lowdon’s Pennsylvania rifle company in June 1775 and became a third lieutenant in the 1st Continental Regiment in January 1776. He was promoted to second lieutenant in September and left the army at the end of 1776. The prisoner was Peter Puillon, whom GW referred to the New York committee of safety in his letter to that body of 6 May.
