C. & O. Hanbury

LS, ViHi: Custis Papers. As long as GW was managing his young ward’s affairs, until 1773, the letters that Capel and Osgood Hanbury addressed to John Parke Custis were in fact directed to GW, who usually endorsed them and routinely answered them when an answer was required. This letter was addressed to “York River Virginia.”

1GW wrote Hanbury on 26 April that he had put Custis’s tobacco on Captain Esten’s ship.

2For the twelve hogsheads of tobacco sent in the America, John Lewis master, see GW to Hanbury, 11 Sept. 1762 and note, and Hanbury to GW, 10 July 1764, n.1.
