[Beverly, Massachusetts, May 2, 1791. On May 30, 1791, Cabot wrote to Tench Coxe:1 “I have the satisfaction of acknowledging the receipt of your obliging letter of the 14th in reply to mine of the 2d instant addressed to the Secretary of the Treasury.”2 Letter not found.]

Cabot was a Salem, Massachusetts, merchant and Federalist. He was a delegate to the state Constitutional Convention in 1780; he was elected to, but did not attend, the Annapolis Convention; and he was a member of his state’s Ratifying Convention in 1788. In June, 1791, he was chosen United States Senator from Massachusetts.
2. Coxe had replied to Cabot’s letter in his capacity as Assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury. During a brief absence from Philadelphia, H left Coxe in charge of the Treasury Department (H to Coxe, May 9, 1791 [printed in this volume]).
