Report of Board of Admiralty, 10 April 1780

Report of Board of Admiralty

MS (NA: PCC, No. 37, fol. 221).

April 10th 1780

The Board of Admiralty beg leave to inform Congress that they are about to order the Mercury a Continental packet from Boston to this Port, and as that vessel is a very fast Sailer they are of opinion that it would be expedient to bring round in her some of Sugar belonging to the Public at that place, and request that they may be Authorized to order 20 hhds of it to be put on board of her.1

1Congress having sanctioned this request, the Board of Admiralty wrote John Bradford, continental agent in Boston, to dispatch the “Mercury” with sugar and as much rum and other liquors, taken from captured British ships, as she could carry. The packet reached Philadelphia safely in mid-June (Journals of the Continental Congress, XVI, 344; Charles O. Paullin, ed., Out-Letters of Board of Admiralty, II, 182–84, 211).
