Sir,

I received a few days since a Case of Seeds from Mr Thouin of the Jardin du Roi to be forwarded to your address by the first opportunity, And as no direct conveyance at present offers I have shipped it on board the Brig John Burgwin—Capt: Perry bound to Philadelphia to the care of the Collector, with a request that he will cause it to be forwarded to you immediately after its arrival.—

RC (MHi); address cover only; with PoC of TJ to James Leitch, 7 Mar. 1820, on verso; addressed by Taylor: “Thomas Jefferson &c: &c: &c: Monticello Virginia ⅌ John Burgwin”; stamp canceled; franked; stamped “SHIP”; postmarked Philadelphia, 16 May.

Thomas Taylor (1786–1875) of London, was appointed the chancellor and principal clerk of the American consulate at Le Havre in 1818, and he served in that capacity for more than forty years. During his final decade of life he was a United States dispatch agent at that French port. Taylor died in Le Havre, leaving an estate in England worth under £7,000 (ASP, Foreign Relations, 5:30–1; Executive Documents printed by order of the House of Representatives [1859], 7:14–5; Index to the Executive Documents of the House of Representatives [1885], 378; Benjamin Perley Poore, comp., Congressional Directory, compiled for the use of Congress [1874], 94; London Times, 7 Jan. 1876; New York Herald, 19 Jan. 1876; Principal Probate Registry, London, Calendar of the Grants of Probate and Letters of Administration made in the Probate Registries of the High Court of Justice in England [1876], 11:337).

The collector at Philadelphia was John Steele.
