John Barnes

Geo: Town 27th May 1803.

MS (ViU); entirely in Barnes’s hand; with several illegible abbreviations and numerals; ellipses in original.

by warrt. deducted: starting at 7 May 1801 in this statement of account and continuing through the ensuing two statements at approximately one-month intervals, the warrants recorded by Barnes are the installments TJ received from the Treasury Department on his $25,000 annual salary as president. Treasury statements of these payments for the periods 5 May 1801 to 8 Mch. 1802 and 14 Apr. 1802 to 7 Mch. 1803 are in DNA: RG 217, MTA.

colo. cary: that is, Edward Carrington, the supervisor of the revenue for Virginia. The $1,500 draft on Carrington was used primarily to reimburse John Wayles Eppes for horses he purchased on TJ’s behalf in 1801 (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1037, 1045–6; Vol. 34:521).

by g & jeffn: on 12 Sep. 1801, TJ directed George Jefferson to remit immediately $1,000 to Barnes. TJ informed Barnes of the transaction the same day, explaining that “I am afraid my arrearages are inconvenient to you” (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1050; Vol. 35:270, 275–6).

by capt lewis’s note: for Meriwether Lewis’s notes on the Bank of Columbia that were credited to TJ’s account with Barnes, see Vol. 36:77–8, 695–7; Vol. 37:439–40.

WS: William Short. For the $1,800 credited to TJ from Short’s account with Barnes, see Vol. 36:697.

by t. carpenter: for the reimbursement of $12.67 received from tailor Thomas Carpenter, see Vol. 36:698.
