RC (ViU); written on a scrap of paper bearing faint impressions of other text, probably in TJ’s hand; at foot of text: “Thomas Jefferson Esquire”; endorsed by TJ.

Credited Mr Shorts a/c: in a letter of this day that is recorded in SJL but has not been found, TJ authorized Barnes to transfer $535.83 from TJ’s account to Short’s (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1033). The transfer was in exchange for Short’s payment from the James River Company that was used to cover TJ’s drafts in Richmond; see TJ to George Jefferson, 5 Jan. 1801.

Barnes included the transfer of funds to Short’s account and the associated remittance to Gibson & Jefferson in a statement of his account with TJ through this day. The statement also recorded $218.90 paid to Conrad & McMunn on 1 Jan.; $20.50 in cash conveyed to TJ by a servant on the 4th; the three checks and $5 in small change mentioned by Barnes in his letter of 7 Jan.; $1.20 for two pocket handkerchiefs on the 10th; and $2.75 on 12 Jan. for two items of horse equipment, a surcingle and a curb. Barnes credited TJ with the $403.02½ carried forward from the previous statement of the account between them on 31 Dec. and, on 3 Jan., with $1,243.75 for TJ’s salary compensation for the quarter ending 31 Dec. ($1,250 less $6.25 for Barnes’s commission of one half of one percent). Barnes carried forward, as of 15 Jan., a balance of $234.66½ in TJ’s favor (MS in ViU, in Barnes’s hand, unsigned, endorsed by him as a copy, and endorsed by TJ, probably as a wrapper for other statements of account also: “Barnes John. Series of accounts for 1800”; see MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1032–3, for some of the transactions).
