RC (ViU: Edgehill-Randolph Papers); at foot of text: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr.”; endorsed by TJ as received on 8 Jan. and so recorded in SJL.

The checks drawn on the Bank of the United States were for Joseph Roberts, Jr., who received $73 for stoves, Dr. David Jackson, and N. G. Dufief (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1033). For the two latter payments, see 9 Jan. below. A letter from TJ to Roberts of that date is recorded in SJL but has not been found.

In a statement of account of 13 Dec. Barnes recorded $100 paid to Stevens Thomson Mason under the date of 12 Sep. 1800 (see Mason to TJ, 5 Sep.); on 8 Oct., $1,241.02 for sundry drafts on the Bank of the United States noted by TJ in his financial memoranda as payments of $406.62 to Roberts & Jones “for nail rod &c. of July,” $154.70 to Henry Sheaff for wine, and $680 to Gibson & Jefferson on account, for a total of $1,241.32 (see TJ to Barnes, 26 Sep.); $200 paid to Gibson & Jefferson on 13 Oct. (see TJ to George Jefferson, 5 Sep.); and, on 22 Nov., payments of $4.50 for three nautical almanacs (see Barnes to TJ, 20 Nov.), $1.20 for two handkerchiefs, and a half dollar for ointment. Barnes’s statement also recorded payments of: $32.62 ½ in cash, $5 to an unidentified “Carrol” (possibly a farrier recorded as John Carrol in TJ’s memoranda of household and stable accounts, 26 Feb.-12 May 1801, in CSmH), and $100 to Conrad & McMunn (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1032), all recorded under 8 Dec.; on the 16th of that month, $4 paid in change (same); and on 19 Dec., $50 to Stephen B. Balch (see TJ to Balch, 18 Dec.) and $8 to Anthony Reintzel, probably for storage (see below). Barnes credited TJ with a balance of $193.51 in TJ’s favor brought forward on 18 Sep. 1800; with $1,243.75 recorded under 7 Oct. as the net proceeds of TJ’s quarterly salary (see statement of account described at Barnes to TJ, 15 Jan. 1801); and with $13.06 credit “By 3 pr Gold” on 8 Dec. Dated 15 Nov. but appearing below the 8 Dec. entry were credits of $463.58 ½ and $307.46½ representing Thomas Leiper’s fifth and final payments to TJ and Thomas Mann Randolph, respectively, for their tobacco (see Barnes to TJ, 28 Aug. 1800). To close the statement Barnes credited TJ with a balance of $474.52 ½ to be carried forward (MS in ViU; in a clerk’s hand, signed and endorsed by Barnes; in two places the date of carrying the new balance forward was apparently changed from 13 Jan. to 13 Dec.; some dates of transactions differ from those that TJ recorded in his financial memoranda).

In another statement of account Barnes recorded charges against TJ of $65 for bank notes, $1 for a penknife, $5 in silver for TJ, and a payment of $1.50 to the Georgetown jewelry firm of Burnett & Rigden for repairing a watch, all under the date 26 Dec. 1800. Those debits were balanced by the $474.52½ carried over to TJ’s credit under the date 13 Dec., plus an undated abatement of $1 from Reintzel on the storage of seven packages and a new balance of $403.02½ in TJ’s favor carried forward on 31 Dec. (MS in ViU, in a clerk’s hand, signed by Barnes; Records of the Columbia Historical Society, 33–4 [1932], 248).
