Wilmington [North Carolina] July 20, 1794. “Mon ame est navrée de douleur! Vous êtes bon pere, bon mari; Mes enfans n’ont plus de mere et moi j’ai perdu celle qui faisoit tout mon bonheur.… Heureux Epoux heureux pere, plaignez moi.…”

1Tousard, a former captain of artillery in the French Army, was an aide to Lafayette in the American Revolution and a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army. After the war he served with the French forces in Santo Domingo until 1792 and then returned to France, where he was imprisoned. In 1793 he was released and came to the United States to join his wife and daughters. His wife died in Wilmington. In 1795 he joined the United States Army as a major.
