[Baltimore, September 16, 1794. On September 19, 1794, Hamilton wrote to Smith: “I have had the pleasure of receiving your two letters of the 16th: instant.”1 Neither letter has been found.]

1Smith referred to one of these letters when he wrote to William Pinkney, president of the Maryland Council, on September 21, 1794, as follows: “… In Consequence of a Letter I wrote to the Secretary of the Treasury 1000 pair of Shoes are sent forward from Philadelphia for the use of the Maryland Detachment together with Artillery & Its Apparatus …” (ALS, Hall of Records of Maryland, Annapolis).
